At the 1957 Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz introduced a new version of the celebrated 300 SL wearing open coachwork: the 300 SL Roadster. In an early suggestion of the increasing focus the manufacturer would place on luxury cars over the ensuing decades, the new roadster was above all a more refined car than its gull-winged predecessor.
DD Classics feel privileged to be able to offer this stunning, time warp example which is probably the finest, unmolested Disc brake 300 SL Roadster available anywhere in the world today. Finished in the fabulous colour scheme of Slate Grey with a lovely Natural Tan hide. Both the beautiful original leather interior, together with the beautifully restored exterior make for an absolutely stunning package.
Our 300 SL had just 1 careful Californian mechanic owner from 1971 until very recently and it is plainly clear that the Mercedes was his pride and joy. The car was regularly serviced by the owner and as a result it is probably the finest driving example we have experienced. The owner also kept a detailed hand written log of all of the works he has had completed over the years, it is a fantastic read and a welcome addition to an already exceptional example. Our car is showing just 99,000 Kilometres, equating to only 61,000 miles which is verified by the service log.
This example is one of the very rare, later cars, these benefited from the much improved 4-wheel Disc-brakes. Today, these last of the breed 300SLs remain the rarest and most collectible iteration of this hugely successful sports car. Later cars with the alloy block often suffered from reliability issues, leading to many of these cars having their engine replaced. The Iron Block cars proved far more dependable and were of course the engines used by the factory in motorsport too, making a Disc-Brake, Iron Block.
Today, the 300 SL Roadster still carries with it an indelible aura of speed, power, and sophisticated style. Fast enough for the sports car lover, and comfortable enough for those who demand some luxury, it has remained one of the most admired automobiles in the world for nearly 60 years. Our car offered here, in its outstanding choice of colours, makes it one of the most attractive examples still on the road.
