The 300 SEL 6.3 is widely regarded as the car that created the modern high performance luxury saloon. By installing the 6.3 litre M100 V8 from the 600 into the W109 body shell, Mercedes-Benz produced a four door capable of genuine sports car performance while retaining the refinement and build quality for which the marque was known.

With 250 bhp and immense torque available from low revs, the car delivers effortless pace. Contemporary road tests recorded 0 to 60 mph in around 6.5 seconds and a top speed close to 140 mph, remarkable figures for a full size saloon in 1969. The air suspension provides excellent ride comfort yet maintains composure at speed, making the car equally suited to long distance touring or fast motorway driving.
