  • “The Most Beautiful Car in the World”

Jaguar would make a habit of shocking the automotive world. Sometimes the impact of its cars reached beyond the showrooms and exposition halls to rock popular culture, yet not even Jaguar’s founder, Sir William Lyons, could have predicted the impact of the Jaguar E-Type.

When introduced at the 1961 Geneva Salon, the new Jaguar stirred passions with its extremely sleek and timeless design backed by staggering performance. Constructed using methods derived from the D-Type sports racing car, the E-Type was a technical marvel. The light and rigid monocoque chassis used the engine itself as a structural part of the car, with the long and sleek bonnet hinged at the front. The headlights were beautifully recessed in the fenders, and covered with contoured Perspex for a free-flowing design and improved aerodynamics. The car featured 4-wheel independent suspension, disc brakes all-around and a 4-speed manual transmission. The proven XK power plant was carried over from the XK150, and made sure the lithe Jaguar would exceed the 150mph mark.

Often called the most beautiful production car of all time, even famously by Enzo Ferrari, the E-Type remains an automotive icon of design, engineering and speed. With spare parts readily available, a number of marque clubs to join and many driving and concours events to attend, the E-Type is an excellent, widely admired collector car.

The car we are honoured to present to you today is no exception to the E-Type’s reputation, presented in truly stunning condition, having benefitted from a comprehensive restoration. Delivered new in November 1961 by American distributors, Jaguar New York, the car looks as it if could have come straight off the set of Mad Men. It is finished in its factory livery of Masons Black coachwork over St James’ Red interior, not to mention it being equipped with a desirable factory hardtop. As can already clearly be seen in the pictures, the car is undoubtedly one of the most striking examples on sale today, particularly in such an elegant specification which really shows off the swooping lines and glorious brightwork. Being a first year, Flat Floor car, it is one of just 631 cars produced, making it extremely rare and highly desirable, as an E-Type in its original, purest form as Malcolm Sayer envisioned it.

Absolutely a car that needs to be seen to be appreciated, it is a perfect addition to any collection, whether one is an avid Jaguar collector or even simply a connoisseur of fine art, this hugely desirable, beautifully restored Flat Floor Roadster is the embodiment of a sculpture on wheels which shouldn’t be missed.
