Ferrari unveiled the 550 Barchetta Pininfarina at the 2000 Paris Motor Show as a tribute to Pininfarina’s seventy years of collaboration with the marque. The model was produced in a limited run of 448 numbered cars, reflecting Ferrari’s intention to create a straightforward, collectible open variant of the 550 series rather than a regular production convertible. True to the original barchetta concept, the car was delivered without a permanent roof. A light emergency soft top was provided, intended only for temporary use at low speeds, reinforcing the car’s focus on open air driving and mechanical purity.
Mechanically, the Barchetta shares the powertrain and chassis fundamentals of the 550 Maranello. It is powered by Ferrari’s naturally aspirated five point five litre V12, producing 478 horsepower and known for its smooth power delivery and durability. This engine is paired with the six speed gated manual gearbox, a defining feature of the era and one that contributes significantly to the driving experience. The front engined rear wheel drive layout, combined with the 550 platform’s well regarded balance, resulted in a car that offered both strong performance and predictable road manners. Even with the more open bodywork, the Barchetta retained much of the structural rigidity of the standard car thanks to extensive bracing.
This particular example is an early production car ordered with the Fiorano Handling Package. This option was introduced by Ferrari for customers seeking a more focused driving feel and included firmer suspension settings, modified steering, and upgraded braking components. Early in its life it was also fitted with a Koenig Specials stainless steel exhaust system with six tailpipes. This system is well known among 550 and 575 owners for providing a distinctive tone without compromising drivability. The car has seen very limited use over the years with the odometer showing only 4,900 miles.
Finished in Giallo Fly with a Nero interior, the car presents cleanly and retains the purposeful appearance that defines the Barchetta. Documentation includes the Ferrari Certificate of Origin, factory manuals, and original correspondence. Also supplied with
- Emergency soft top
- Toolkit
- Jack
- Car cover
With its low mileage, early build, Fiorano specification, and position within the limited production run of 448 cars, this 550 Barchetta stands as a strong example of Ferrari’s open V12 grand tourer, combining rarity with the mechanical character that makes the 550 series so highly regarded today.Â
